Characters

In order to play MythWatch, players need their own Mythemaker characters. You can pick a pre-made character or easily make your own.

Pre-made characters

Players can pick one of a few characters with filled-in and ready to play character sheets.

Create your own Mythmaker

Players can create their own custom character in three easy steps.

  • Step 1. Choose an Origin
  • Stap 2. Allocate Characteristics Points
  • Stap 3. Flesh out your character

Fill in on an empty character sheet, which you can download below.

Play cards

During play you might get a Status card. There are 3 types of Status cards: Major Setback, (normal) Setback, and Fortune. In most cases, the Guide is the one giving you one of these cards according to what makes sense in the story. Download these below.

Step 1. Pick an Origin

Your Origin determines who you used to be before you became a Mythmaker. A Mythmaker can come from all eras: the distant past, the present, or perhaps even the future. In this book you will find nine Origins to choose from.

Each Origin starts with 3 Talents. These represent different ways in which your Mythmaker excels. Some Talents grant extra dice in specific situations, while others give you access to special actions.

Each Origin also includes a list of equipment. These items can help you during your adventures. For example, your Guide may give you an extra die when you describe how you use your equipment during a Stunt.

Would you rather create your own Origin? You can! See the module on page XX for all character options.

Step 2. Allocate Characteristic Points

Once you have chosen your Origin, it is time to decide on the Characteristics of your Mythmaker. You can invest in the following Characteristics.

Each Characteristic starts at value 1 (so you can never have a value of 0 on your sheet). You may distribute 6 additional points among all Characteristics. You do this by filling in the dots on your character sheet. Note: this must be done in order from left to right. For example, you must fill in Strength 2 before you gain access to Strength 3.

Characteristics can have a maximum value of 5. However, we recommend spreading your points more evenly across all Characteristics. It is possible to improve your Characteristics later as your Mythmaker gains experience. See page XX for more information about this.

Step 3. Flesh out character

People are more than just a selection of Talents and Characteristics; your character has a name and a personality. You may even already have ideas about their family, childhood, ideals, and fears. You don’t need to work everything out in detail (sometimes you discover this during play), but adding details is a good way to figure out how you want to play your Mythmaker. MythWatch is, after all, a roleplaying game, so you have the opportunity to fully immerse yourself into your character!

Your anchor is a quick way to learn more about your Mythmaker. Every Mythmaker has an Anchor, an object that helps you travel back to your own time. You receive yours for free alongside the rest of your equipment!

An Anchor always has a special meaning to you and therefore says something about your life and personality. Maybe you received your Anchor from your best friend. Maybe it is an object that helped you through a difficult period in your life. Maybe it is a pair of slippers you wore down completely in your childhood home.

Remember to be careful with your Anchor; if it breaks, it becomes much harder to find your way back to your own time.

You can find more tips about fleshing out your character and their relationship with your fellow player characters in the rulebook.
