Ring sword

A ring sword is the quintessential symbol for the bond between lord and loyal subject.

A ring was fitted at the hilt, symbolizing the promise of loyal service, much like a wedding ring. If that service ever ended, the ring was also removed.

One example found near Dokkum beautifully shows one such ring; two connected solid silver rings with traces of gilding and niello (a thin layer of silver decoration). Other embellishments include triangle shapes.

At the spot where the ring would brush against the wielder, much of these decorations have been abraded – a sign of longterm use. Nevertheless, at some point this ring was removed from the sword, as evidenced by the fixing pin visible on the rings.
